High School Analytical Literature & Composition
This class consists of 30 one-hour online sessions packed with basic writing tools, composition help, literature analysis, and writing coaching. We will start by reviewing basic essay writing principles and will learn how to analyze short stories and their authors by using annotation, inference, discernment, and discussion. We will cover literary elements such as plot and structure, characters, theme, setting and point of view.
The student will learn how to identify literary devices such as allusion, parallelism, euphemism, symbolism, imagery, and irony.
This class is being offered for the 2021-2022 fall and spring semesters and will meet online through Google Meet on Wednesdays from 1-2 PM EST.

Cathy has been teaching in various capacities and school systems from Elementary K-8, High School 9-12, Sunday School, Bible studies, and Homeschool Co-ops since 1977 and utilized a wide variety of writing curricula. In her opinion, the products created by the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) offer the best approach to provide students of all ages with the tools necessary to become skillful writers.
Her passion is teaching! Cathy loves working with children of all ages and encouraging families in the education of their children. She believes in giving her students TOOLS that will give them CONFIDENCE as they write. Rather than expecting them to just invent something intriguing on a blank piece of paper, she prefers to watch them GROW in their knowledge of these tools and the ability to use them proficiently.
